Jill left school at sixteen, and went on to enroll in the two Chelsea Art School and Croydon Art School. Two years later, she finished her 1st novel The Worst Witch, about a little witch who does not in shape in at her new college – a story she says was heavily based on her encounters at the convent. She sent it off to a few massive London publishers, who all turned it down, and Jill “put it in a drawer and made the decision to concentrate on other things as an alternative.” After a spell working as a nanny and in a children’s house, which she cherished, Jill had a phone contact from a small publisher intrigued in The Worst Witch.
